About Mooncake Foods
The dishes at Mooncake Foods can best be described as contemporary Asian comfort food as interpreted by an American who grew up in the Hispanic Brooklyn neighborhood. There’s miso-glazed salmon, crawfish dumplings, and whitefish salad banh mi, which initially sounds weird but tastes so great in your mouth these are practically addictive.
Founded in 2003, the chain of casual restaurants continues to grow in size with locations in Soho, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, and the Financial District. When it first opened, it was an anachronism – an Asian restaurant without woks, fryers, and heavy sauces and processed meat sure to clog up your arteries. Instead, the dishes are usually grilled, steamed, and roasted.
The menu, however, speaks of the chain’s Chinese heritage with its emphasis on its spicy green sauce, an equally addictive sauce that should be paired with nearly everything on the menu. Other items on the menu include soups and sandwiches as well as your usual Pan-Asian dishes, all of which are available at the affordable Mooncake Foods prices.
